In a surprise move, Motorola (well, Lenovo I guess?) has unveiled its next Razer foldable, the Moto Razr 2022. I say it’s a “surprise” because I don’t even know if I’ve seen any teases or hints or suggestions that this device was coming from official channels like Twitter or Motorola’s store. However, we’re in with a plethora of specs and features for this new attempt at Moto’s foldable market.

So while we get into it, understand that we know nothing about Motorola’s plans for the Razr 2022. It may be coming to the US — and I’ll bet it will be — but we have no idea about pricing or timing or why Lenovo is spoiling the party early.

The Lenovo Store landing page for the new Moto Razr 2022 has left out the stuff and shows a seemingly exclusive foldable phone that could compete with Samsung. The previous version of the Razer Foldable cut a lot of corners without being competitive in price, but that may not be a problem this year.

The new Moto Razr 2022 features Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, 6.7″ internal OLED display (with HDR10+) at 144Hz, external 2.7″ display, and dual rear cameras, with main 50MP shooter (OIS), as well as a wide-angle 13MP lens (121°) with macro capabilities. The selfie camera weighs 32MP. According to GSMArena, the phone will ship with RAM/storage configurations of 8GB/128GB, 8GB/256GB and 12GB/512GB.

It’ll run Motorola’s MIUI 4.0 experience on top of Android, where you’ll get Moto’s smooth feature set without the big bloat you get from a Samsung or OnePlus skin. Motorola has also worked to make this foldable useful when half-open, giving you a dual-screen experience like Samsung does on its foldables. An example would be a messaging app in the lower half and another app in the top half, while opened in an L-shape. It can also be used in-camera, with viewfinder up and down controls.

You will notice that there has been some change in the overall design of the phone as well. Instead of trying to recreate the old-school Razer Phone’s old vibes, Motorola has removed that obnoxious chin and given us more screen space to use. You’ll know I correctly called the Moto the Razer’s chin because it was terrible to navigate in daily use. This new Razr 2022 looks like a foldable one that you can use for an extended period of time unlike that 2020 model.
