There is no party here! It’s been nearly three decades since fans met the Banks family at Father of the Bride and watched Annie Banks (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) go from college grad to beaming bride.
The Nancy Meyers rom-com hit theaters in 1991, showing what it’s really like for a father to let his little girl go on her wedding day—or in the case of George Banks (Steve Martin), lose their mind while battling marriage
The memorable film, which starred Diane Keaton as Annie’s mother, Kieran Culkin as younger brother Matty Banks, and George Newburn as the groom, Brian Mackenzie, led to the 1995 sequel, Father of the Bride Part II.
The original, however, wouldn’t have been complete without over-the-top wedding planners, Frank Egelhofer (Martin Short) and his assistant Howard Weinstein (BD Wong). The two pushed for the swans, redecorating the family yard and taking out all the furniture, all of which sent George through the roof.
Twelve years after the film’s sequel revealed the story of Annie and Nina getting pregnant at the same time, some of the cast reunited in person, and fans just couldn’t get enough of it.
Williams-Paisley wrote via Instagram in March 2017 alongside a photo of herself with her movie dad and go-to planner, “Great to see my former costars @stevemartintogo and @themartinshort in #Nashville at the Opryhouse tonight. ”
Seven months later, Newborn teased the possibility of a third film from the cast, telling a November 2017 Us Weekly exclusive, “I know there’s a script and there’s talk.”
At the time, the actor also revealed what it would take for his character to follow his life as an independent communications consultant.
“I think Brian Mackenzie will probably be a grandfather now. He’s had a kid, so I think at this point he’s probably got a grandson. Or at least close to it,” he told us. Will be getting married. They’ve probably invested in a startup in Silicon Valley because they’re on the West Coast. And they probably live in the Bay Area. They’ve had four kids. They’ve got to shoot a third. We need to do a third. . that would be great.”
Three years later, Newborn’s third film theory was confirmed when Netflix announced in September 2020 that the cast was reuniting for a reunion film titled Father of the Bride Part 3(ish).
“Finally! Very happy to inform you that I have made a new movie – Father of the Bride Part 3(ish),” producer Meyers wrote via Instagram in September alongside the film’s trailer. It’s because it’s not as long as a movie, but I think you’re going to love it!”
The original cast joined the project together to tell the next part of Banks’ story and help raise money for World Central Kitchen.
