Downton Abbey Star Michelle Dockery to lead peaky blinders creator steven knightpersonal drama of this town for BBC.
Knight’s six-parter has cameras rolling in Birmingham and features a cast of other British actors including Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella) and David Dawson (my policeman),
previously called two notes, The show tells the story of an extended family and four young people who are drawn into the world of ska and two-tone music that burst forth from the grass roots scene of Coventry and Birmingham in the late 70s and early 80s. Unite Black, White and Asian youth.
According to the BBC, Universal Music Group’s Mercury Studios is the co-producer and “will bring together an exciting array of high profile musical artists to help create the backdrop for Knight’s incredible story”. Mercury is co-producing with Banijay-backed Kudos and Nebulastar in association with Kudos North, Stigma Films and Nick Angel.
“It’s a project very close to my heart,” said Vipul Knight, whose war drama SAS: Rogue Heroes Currently airing on BBC One.
“It is about an era I have lived through and know well and features characters I feel I have grown up with. It’s a love letter to Birmingham and Coventry but I hope people around the world will be able to relate to it.”
Knight is the creator, writer and executive producer along with Karen Wilson, Martin Haines, Katie McAleese, Joe McLellan, Laura Conway, Matthew James Wilkinson and Nick Angell. Paul Whittington is directing, Charlotte Surtees is producing and Banijay Rights is distributing internationally.
