His exit was announced on Wednesday, ending an eight-year run.

Womenswear Daily reported Michele’s expected departure on Tuesday, citing sources that Michele had failed to meet a request to “initiate a strong design turnaround”, and the chairman of Gucci parent Kering, François-Henri Pinault Was looking for a change of pace.

In an official announcement by Gucci, Michele was credited with “playing a fundamental role in making the brand what it is today through her tremendous creativity.”

Mitchell cited “different viewpoints” as the reason for his departure, without elaborating.

“Today marks the end of an extraordinary journey for me spanning more than 20 years within a company to which I have devoted all my love and creative passion,” he added. He was appointed creative director in January 2015.

Gucci said an in-house design team would handle the collection until a new creative director was named.
